Assessment guide
How to read student work on this assessment — standards alignment, what strong understanding looks like, and common gaps.
Learning progression
Target understanding
1.A.1 Develop an initial model to describe changes and mechanisms at both the observable and the particle level that cause hail to fall during a brief time period.
Standards alignment
1.A.1 Develop an initial model to describe changes and mechanisms at both the observable and the particle level that cause hail to fall during a brief time period.
What understanding looks like
Strong
- See Pre-Assessment Reference for Students Initial Models for complete guidance on ideas to look for in the initial models.

Building towards
1.A.2 Develop an initial model to describe changes and mechanisms at both the observable and the particle level that cause hail to fall during a brief time period.
What to look / listen for
See Pre-Assessment Reference for Students Initial Models for complete guidance on ideas to look for in the initial models.
What to do
If you haven’t already, copy both Initial Model and Representing Particle-Level Changes in the System for future reference so you can assess individual student growth between now and future key summative assessment points in the unit. Additionally, this initial model collection will help you (1) get a sense of commonalities and differences across models and (2) plan for the consensus model discussion during day 2 by serving as an individual pre-assessment of student understanding.
