What to do

Depending on when in the year you teach this unit, your students may need more or less scaffolding with the mathematics used in this assessment. Unit rate and ratios are part of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics in 6th grade. (CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.RP.A.3). Because the rates of change for Mt. Mitchell are per 1,000 years, students will need to do some conversions to figure out how much this mountain will be affected per year in order to be able to successfully make comparisons between Mt. Everest and Mt. Mitchell. Some students may need some scaffolding in these conversions. See Erosion Rates vs. Uplift Rates for more guidance.
