Facilitation guidance from the lesson plan — what to notice in student thinking and how to respond while teaching.
What to look / listen for
Students to share ideas similar but not limited to:
- areas in the school that would be too high for a person smaller in stature (ie: counters, etc).
- distance between rooms in the school that are far apart and could lead to it taking too long to get to a class on time (if the school is large and/or has a lot of stairs).
What to do
If students are unsure how tall 3’5” is and what areas in the school are taller than this, provide them a meter stick to use and prompt them to measure different areas. If they struggle with ideas for redesigning or adapting, encourage students to look back at their notes in their science notebook or rewatch part of the TED talk, particularly to the examples given (i.e. airport, bathroom, coffee counter, chair), which might lead to some ideas based on what Sinéad said from her experiences that they can then apply to the school space.
The main purpose of this assessment is to support students to begin thinking about how they can have control over the aspects of the design of their environment, and how their decisions for adapting/redesigning their environment impacts its accessibility for others.
