What to look / listen for
Students to share ideas/perceptions being represented:
- The icon that says “handicapped” seems to support a perception that the person needs help and may not be able to do things for themselves.
- The icon that says “reserved” seems to support a perception that the person is able and eager to do things for themselves. It also supports a perception that they might need a reserved space to be able to access these things since they are in a wheelchair.
What to do
If students struggle to think about how these two icons support different perceptions, ask them questions such as:
What is the person in the wheelchair in each icon doing?
What does the way the person is positioned make it look like they are doing?
We have figured out from Jeremy and Matt’s stories that people in wheelchairs are very able. Which icon represents that best? Why does the other icon seem less representative?
