16.A Critically read scientific texts adapted for classroom use to obtain information on how communities are implementing new activities at different scales to mitigate the flow of carbon into and out of the atmosphere and/or adapt to changes in the community.
What to do
Solutions exist across different parts of the community, from building, to urban planning, to energy use and agriculture. Individuals can contribute to some solutions while some are implemented at the community level or by business or government. Before moving onto Lesson 17, it will be important for students to understand the diverse approach communities take across many different sectors and at different scales (individual, community, business, or government scales). These ideas will help support them as they consider their own local planning.
If students struggle to identify these ideas, ask questions such as:
Which solutions are focused on energy use? Agriculture? New buildings or how to improve existing buildings? Managing water resources?
Who is participating in these solutions? Individuals or families, or is the solution being implemented at a larger scale?
