Facilitation guidance from the lesson plan — what to notice in student thinking and how to respond while teaching.

Building towards

2.A Analyze and interpret data to identify patterns in the data that provide evidence of the relationship between a force (cause) on an instrument and the motion/vibration (effect) of the instrument.

What to look / listen for

  • Students making connections between the force on the instrument and the motion or vibration of the instrument for each case.
  • Students using the data to show the relationship between the cause and the effect on the instrument.

What to do

If students are focused on force or motion but not the relationship between the two, use prompts in the Building Understandings Discussion to bring out ideas that highlight the relationship. If students are struggling to write about patterns across instruments, focus on the similarities and differences prompts in the subsequent discussion.

When students have responded to these questions, they can share their ideas with a partner.

Building Understandings Discussion. Project slide K. After students have shared with a partner, ask a few students to describe some of the patterns they identified in how parts of different instruments moved and changed as they were making sounds.✱
