What to do
If students need more support as you’re visiting groups during the investigation, suggest they focus on color changes or brightness using prompts such as these.
Color changes
The light started out white. Did it stay that way?
What colors did you see close to the flashlight? Farther away from the flashlight?
What do you think happened to the light to make it change that way?
Brightness
Was the light from the flashlight just as bright after it crossed the container?
When and where was the light from the flashlight the brightest? When was it dimmest?
What do you think happened to the light to make it change that way?
If students need more support synthesizing their results and responding to the sense-making questions on Investigation Elements Map, Predictions, and Results, you might suggest two groups share materials and set up side-by-side views lengthwise and widthwise through two containers to directly compare and contrast the color changes and brightness differences they observe.
- Clean up and record what we figured out from this investigation. Display slide G for cleanup directions (modified as needed for your classroom) and provide time for cleanup.
- Display slide H and remind students to record their thinking in response to the final questions on their Investigation Elements Map, Predictions, and Results handout. Remind them to bring their handouts to the Scientists Circle.
