Building towards
1.B Obtain information from images, videos, and podcasts to describe patterns in natural phenomena of objects in the Solar System (and beyond), as seen from Earth.
What to look / listen for
Students should use the strategies and prompts on Listening Group Roles Reference to obtain and document information from the podcasts on Making Sense of the Podcast Jigsaw about the patterns and phenomena described by each interviewee and the connections to the sky. Listen for students to refer to the phenomena from each podcast:
Jess
when wombat season is and how what you see in the sky is connected to what you experience on Earth
Thebe
viewing Selemela and the Southern Cross or the giraffe stars and making connections to people all over the world who have been collecting knowledge about the sky and testing their ideas to transmit information to the next generation
Gerado
how using Sun and Moon based calendars allowed for rituals and gatherings to occur and mark the years
Annette
how the Loon is visible all year round but the Great Panther constellation is not.
What to do
If students struggle to find the information they need in the reading, call attention to the strategies and prompts in Reading: The Body’s Nervous System.✱ Remind them to use the before, during, and after reading strategies from the close listening protocol on slide k. If students are struggling with listening to the podcast, allow students to read their assigned transcript with a partner.
