Facilitation guidance from the lesson plan — what to notice in student thinking and how to respond while teaching.

What to do

Recall that Progress Tracker entries should not be scored or graded because doing so would invalidate their purpose--to be a safe space for students to process and record their thoughts honestly and without worry about evaluation. At the end of this lesson, students will complete a reflection on their Progress Tracker entry and other ideas they have built in this lesson. You can collect that reflection as a formative assessment; see the related assessment guidance callout box for 3.B at the end of day 2 of this lesson.

Transition to the next activity. Say something like, Now that you have had a chance to compare the patterns you found with your classmates’ ideas about body structures, let’s continue to explore this question of how ancient and modern penguins might be connected. Some of you wondered about where these ancient penguins were living and what their environment was like at the time, so I have some additional data about that for us to investigate.
