What to look / listen for
Students do not need to have sorted the penguins in any particular way or found a specific pattern. Rather, look for students to have clearly organized the penguins based on some individual body structures or behaviors (or a combination of those) to demonstrate that they have been able to analyze the data in order to identify some patterns in the external structures and behaviors of penguins.
What to do
If there is no clear distinction between groups of penguins that students create, respond with questions such as the following: Are some of these penguins more similar than others? In what ways? How can that be shown through organizing them? Keep note of students who struggled to find patterns and organize the penguins on day 1 so you can visit them while sorting on day 2 to ask similar questions and monitor their progress.
