Assessment guide

How to read student work on this assessment — standards alignment, what strong understanding looks like, and common gaps.

Learning progression

Target understanding

10.A Critically read scientific texts and construct an explanation using models and math to describe how sexual reproduction results in offspring with genetic variation in the context of goldfish coloration.

Standards alignment

MS-LS3-1MS-LS3-2MS-LS4-210.A

10.A Critically read scientific texts and construct an explanation using models and math to describe how sexual reproduction results in offspring with genetic variation in the context of goldfish coloration.

What understanding looks like

Strong

  • See Key for Goldfish Assessment and Key for Checklist for Obtaining and Evaluating Information from Scientific Text for expected student responses and Rubric for Goldfish Assessment for scoring guidance.

Facilitation guidance from the lesson plan — what to notice in student thinking and how to respond while teaching.

Building towards

10.A Critically read scientific texts and construct an explanation using models and math to describe how sexual reproduction results in offspring with genetic variation in the context of goldfish coloration.

What to look / listen for

See Key for Goldfish Assessment and Key for Checklist for Obtaining and Evaluating Information from Scientific Text for expected student responses and Rubric for Goldfish Assessment for scoring guidance.

What to do

If students need extra support you can choose to allow them to use their science notebook or classroom consensus models to help them with this transfer task. You may also choose to help students extract information from the text in the assessment so they can then apply that information to explain and model the new phenomenon, bearing in mind that students will have future opportunities to demonstrate their use of these practices.

Look forward to next time’s work before students leave the classroom. Show slide C. Say, We have figured out so much from our investigations. Next time, we will go back to our Driving Question Board to see what questions we can now answer and what we still need to figure out.

SUPPORTING STUDENTS IN MAKING CONNECTIONS IN ELA

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RST.6-8.4

Determine the meaning of symbols, key terms, and other domain-specific words and phrases as they are used in a specific scientific or technical context relevant to grades 6-8 texts and topics.

Students need to interpret the results for Dr. Chen’s research study conducted in 1928. They need to understand this information in order to explain on the Goldfish Assessment how the trait of coloration in goldfish is inherited.
